WHAT CAN I DO AFTER I GRADUATE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ART HISTORY?

Department of Archaeology and Art History

The Department of Archaeology and History of Art provides an education that combines different disciplines including archaeology, archeological sciences, art history, cultural heritage management and museology. Students take courses on topics such as Turkey’s Prehistory, the Bronze Age, the Greco-Roman Period, Byzantium, and the Seljuk and Ottoman Eeras, while also obtaining information on the arts and archaeology of the neighboring regions of the Mediterranean, the Near East and Europe. Students who want to specialize in the field of art history can consolidate what they learn about Byzantine, Seljuk or Ottoman arts and architecture with their internships with museums and cultural heritage projects. They can also gain experience by taking part in the Barcın Höyük Artifact Analysis Project, the Konya Ereğli Surface Survey, or the Küçükyalı, Kaymakçı, and Myra-Andriake archaeological excavations, all of which are managed by faculty members. In addition to archeological excavations, the Department of Archaeology and Historyof Art provide courses which are further enriched by museum tours and conferences featuring expert speakers. Students in this department are also encouraged to enroll in courses offered in Hittite, Ancient Greek, Latin or Ottoman.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ART HISTORY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:

Associate Professor Rana Özbal,
Faculty Member in the Department of Archaeology and History of Art

I think it’s a great opportunity to have a laboratory at Koç University with the necessary equipment, devices and materials where we can conduct interdisciplinary archaeological studies. When I am not teaching or doing other research, I spend much of my time in either the archaeology or the chemistry laboratories. I conduct my research together with students from the Department of Archaeology and History of Art. This way, students have the opportunity to gain experience in both archeological excavations in the field and in laboratory analyses. I enjoy lecturing on archaeology because, particularly for methodology classes, I can explain things using the materials in our laboratory. This gives our students the chance to learn about these materials not only in theory but also through application.

THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ART HISTORY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:

Elifgül Doğan, 2016 Graduate from the Department of Archaeology and History of Art with a Minor Degree from the Department of International Relations

The question of what processes humanity had undergone over thousands of years of history to get to where it is today was an important factor that drove me to choose archaeology as my field of study. Koç University gave me the educational foundation and the opportunity to answer these questions under the guidance of successful and understanding faculty members. The foundation I received allowed me to pursue my interests and put my plans for the future into action without hesitation. While I studied in the Department of Archaeology and Art History, I simultaneously also had the opportunity to study in the Department of International Relations for my minor, to get a multidisciplinary approach towards the world. In addition to courses such as art history, archaeology and cultural heritage, we had the opportunity to study at research centers including ANAMED (Koç University Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations), VEKAM (Vehbi Koç Ankara Studies Research Center), GABAM (Center for Late Antique and Byzantine Studies) and KUYTAM (Koç University Surface Science and Technology Center). The internship opportunities at our faculty members’ excavation projects and at reputable museums ensured that we obtained professional experience before graduation.
