Being a good economist requires you to have a strong theoretical background and apply that knowledge to understand and interpret the economic problems that you face on a daily basis. In the Economics Department, we make sure that our students are trained on both fronts. In the era after the global financial crisis, we don’t have any difficulty recruiting students to our department who have witnessed the crisis and want to understand the economic causes and consequences of this global event. In line with the emphasis placed on research at Koç University, our faculty members conduct high quality research while teaching   undergraduate and graduate courses at the same time. Our students are privileged enough to hear the results of cutting edge research directly from our faculty and they even get a chance to assist our faculty with their research on certain projects. Our graduates typically find job opportunities in respectable companies at home and abroad. If they choose to pursue an academic career, they continue their studies in leading universities in Europe and US.

I had long-term internships during my university years in various departments at very important organizations. After my last internship, I realized that for a person to be happy all their lives and enjoy their work, they should do the job they love. What I’m mostly interested in, what I watch, listen to and follow the most is sports. And I do sports myself. Even though there isn’t a settled professional sports sector in Turkey, I took a risk and started to research what could be done in this field. I say I took a risk because I figured with my high grades and experience, I could easily find a job at a very good company. Instead, I decided to go into a sector that didn’t even have a proper description. But I’m glad that I took that risk. If I’d taken a job in a normal company and worked 5 years, only to say to myself I wished I’d take that risk, it would really bother me. Most probably, by that time, I wouldn’t want to throw it all away and start something new. What do I do now? I work in the Marketing Department of Beşiktaş Gymnastics Club. I manage the e-sports teams. E-sports will definitely shape the future and it’s great to work in this sector for BJK, one of Turkey’s greatest sports clubs. Of course, nothing is as perfect as it seems from the outside, but I’m still glad I took that risk. My humble advice to other young people is that they should never give up on their dreams, and they should do the job they love. Never worry about money. You’ll make money anyway. After all, you’ll graduate from Turkey’s best university.
