WHAT CAN I DO AFTER I GRADUATE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING?
Department of Industrial Engineering
The Department of Industrial Engineering works with the equipment, materials, energy resources, information systems, and human factors necessary to design integrated systems that function effectively and efficiently. These design and improvement principles can be applied to various industries such as manufacturing, logistics, finance and banking, energy, and healthcare. Industrial engineers should have creativity, a systematic approach, and strong analytical thinking and communication skills. Koç University’s Department of Industrial Engineering students learn probability and statistics, engineering economics, random processes, information systems, modelling and simulation, optimization and performance analysis, facility planning, and production management. They can specialize in supply chain and logistics, services, and financial systems by taking major elective and free elective courses.
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:
Dr. Mehmet Gönen, Faculty Member in the Department of Industrial Engineering
Using existing resources properly and more efficiently has become a critical issue in recent years since it can have significant consequences. Since its emergence, the concept of efficiency has been a focal point for industrial engineers, as its effects have the potential to be more permanent and meaningful in the future. In this context, industrial engineers started to focus their research on the effects of limited resources on many systems in various sectors ranging from energy to healthcare. The deterministic aspect of industrial engineering is to first understand complex and upper systems before analyzing sub-systems in depth. And this requires a definition of systems as a whole. As industrial engineers, we aim to understand the relations between sub-systems, and also to represent the limitations of the system caused by the upper-system, using mathematical models. It’s only possible to obtain meaningful outputs from these models by moving and analyzing them in computer environments. The main aim of the Department of Industrial Engineering is to train engineers who adopt a systematic approach, have strong mathematical backgrounds, and a good command of information technologies. Koç University provides these opportunities, and also offers a multidisciplinary education to students to ensure that they can communicate with groups from different fields.
INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:
Canan Güneş Çorlu, 2006 Graduate from the Department of Industrial Engineering
After graduating from Koç University’s Department of Industrial Engineering, I started my PhD at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, Department of Operations Management. I had decided to study for a doctorate when I was a junior at university. I was particularly interested in the department courses in my 3rd year, and I was questioning how all the equations were obtained. In addition, I realized that I enjoyed teaching the group studies with my friends. In other words, both teaching and research excited me – and I thought being an academic was the right profession for me. I’m glad I thought that way because right now I’m really doing the job I love. Professors and friends who shared their experiences have helped me in this process, and I’m thankful to them. It is critical to first know yourself before making future plans. And university is the place where you can discover yourself. In addition, never hesitate to ask questions to find what’s best for you. I believe our professors and graduates will help you in this regard.
