THE DEPARTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:
Dr. Selim Erdem Aytaç, Faculty Member of the Department of International Relations
I completed my undergraduate studies at Sabancı University in 2004. After working as a Management Advisor in the private sector, I started my master’s degree at Koç University, Department of International Relations in 2007 and I started working as an academic after I graduated. This was a good preparation for my doctoral studies. After graduating in 2009, I continued my doctoral education at Yale University. I completed my PhD in Political Science in December 2014. My academic studies continue in the field of comparative political behavior. In this broad field, I focus specifically on the determinants of voting behavior, the impact of economics on election results, populist political movements, and the dynamics of large-scale protest movements. I adopt a multiple methods approach in my empirical studies, conducting my research through case studies, interviews, quantitative methods, formal modeling, and experimental designs.

There are many reasons why Koç University is one of the most preferred universities in Turkey. I think the most important is that it offers students many opportunities to shape their careers in the direction they want. Thanks to the knowledge and experience I gained at Koç University, I have worked with local administrations and non-governmental organizations. When I wanted to go in a different direction in my career, I started to help migrants who are victims of war. It is very important that Koç University trains its students about conditions in both Turkey and the rest of the world. I improved myself through international social activities when I was a student, and I had the opportunity to do internships with international organizations such as the United Nations and NATO. Another difference is the value Koç University gives to its students. Thanks to its international contacts and the knowledge accumulation of faculty members, students are directed to the most up-to-date options and are always a step ahead. Equipped with the best skills and values, Koç University graduates contribute to the society they live in across the world, and they do the job they love.
