WHAT CAN I DO AFTER I GRADUATE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS?
Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics teaches a variety of courses in the areas of real analysis, complex analysis, topology, functional analysis, probability, statistics, differential equations, numerical analysis, algebraic geometry, combinatorics, algebra, and number theory.
The Department of Mathematics provides students from the Physical Sciences and Engineering Departments as well as students from other faculties the opportunity to obtain a solid mathematical background through the Core Program and elective courses.
The faculty members in the Department of Mathematics are distinguished scholars with their research in mathematics, applied mathematics and mathematical physics.
THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:
Associate Professor Dr. Kazım Büyükboduk, Faculty Member in the Department of Mathematics
Mathematics is the ultimate product of our intellectual creativity. In the core of mathematics, there is infinite freedom to our world of thought. It shows us how to weigh reality with rigor and how to question what we know as true – free of all dogma and prejudice, but also as innovatively as possible. Therefore, it is not surprising that a mathematical object lies behind Einstein’s universe, the passwords that protect our bank accounts, and Nash’s economic model. My current research work focuses on topics related to the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture. I collaborate with colleagues based in Germany, France, Japan and Canada on important problems of the subject in this regard.
THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:
Canberk Irımağzı, 2014 Graduate from the Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics, with its distinguished academicians, was the main reason for me to continue in the academic field after I graduated. As my professors had done before me, my goal was to get my doctorate degree from a high-quality university, preferably abroad, and to specialize in this field. Thanks to my professors’ references, I was accepted into the doctoral program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Now, I am about to start this intensive education, and I plan on becoming an expert academician in my field after I receive my doctorate. I have come to this point because of the advice and guidance of my professors, and I am very happy and excited for the future.
Alp Uzman, 2016 Double Major Program Graduate from the of Department Mathematics and Philosophy
The main reasons why I chose Koç University for my undergraduate education are the esteemed instructors in the Department of Mathematics and the fact that it offers a double major program with the Department of Philosophy. I took advantage of the opportunities offered by Koç University as much as possible and they helped me realize what I really wanted to do. I gained experience as a teaching assistant through the Work-Study program. I studied as an exchange student at the University of California Irvine for one semester and these both greatly contributed to my academic life. In addition, Koç University provides diverse social facilities. In my first year of school, I founded the Aikido Club, which is still active. I decided to pursue an academic career, well before I completed my undergraduate studies. All the opportunities that Koç University offered – the ones I took advantage of as well as those I could not –all played a role in this decision. I was accepted into the Mathematics Doctoral Program at Pennsylvania State University and I am currently continuing my studies there.
