WHAT CAN I DO AFTER I GRADUATE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING?
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineers design, construct, and control materials and instruments to respond to social needs. These materials and instruments vary from nano-materials, steel and smart materials, macro engines, and autonomous-moving robots to 5-axis CNC counters. These are indispensable components for various sectors such as the automotive, space science, agriculture, food, textile, energy, medicine, computer and manufacturing industries. Students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Koç University learn and apply the basic principles of mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, materials, computer-aided modeling, design, and automation. They can specialize in mechatronics and robotics, materials and production, calculated mechanics, and design by taking major area and free elective courses.
THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:
Associate Professor Doctor Erdem Alaca, Faculty Member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering
As faculty members in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, we believe in interdisciplinary research and cooperation. We conduct cooperative projects with many local and foreign organizations as well as with faculty members of Koç University. Our PhD students spend 12 months in foreign countries for their thesis studies and to improve themselves in the field of manufacturing technology. We believe in learning through research. In addition to graduate and doctoral students, interested undergraduate and even high school students can study in our laboratories. The majority of these students graduate having conducted scientific manufacturing. Our graduates continue their graduate and doctoral studies at Koç University or at other universities in foreign countries. We also believe in holistic research. All thesis research includes components of design, production, and properties. This is how we seek to reach our goal of training individuals with solid scientific reasoning. Our aim is to further broaden the vision of mechanical engineers in our country, raise awareness by doing research on the conditions of the 21st century, and produce a labor force with the skills to cope with its challenges.
THE DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:
Can Onur, 2012 Graduate from the Department of Mechanical Engineering
With the support and motivation of academics who graduated from world-renowned schools, I pursued my passion for aviation and studied at Georgia Technology Institute, Department of Aerospace Engineering for two and half years. While I was studying in the graduate program, I worked as an assistant researcher at NASA’s Langley Research Center. After the experience I obtained in the US, I worked for Turkish Aerospace Industrial Inc. for two years. As of 2017, I have been working on navigation-focused innovation projects at a start-up in Munich. I think that Koç University has the mission to train individuals who are successful not only in our country but also in the world. Koç University played a big role in developing the communication skills and self-confidence I’ve used in international and intellectual settings since my graduation. And the friendships I made with people from different departments also had an effect on this. I take my pride in having been a part of this family everywhere I go.
