WHAT CAN I DO AFTER I GRADUATE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND GENETICS?
Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics
The life sciences, biotechnological research and new inventions, the completion of the Human Genome Project, and rapidly-developing technologies all affect biology education while presenting new paradigms and needs. New treatment methods are developed every day, and a revolution is taking place in pharmaceutical design on the basis of data on the role of defective genes in diseases. Researchers create new drug classes using gene sequences and the functions of protein structures instead of the conventional trial-and-error method. The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics was established to meet such “new biology” needs. The curriculum of the department includes courses on the complex interaction between cells and organisms and defines the features of the structures that result from such interactions. The department provides graduates a vast number of job opportunities in the industry since it focuses on interdisciplinary research and practice. Graduates can work in sectors such as the food, pharmaceutical, healthcare, energy, and agriculture industries.
THE DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND GENETICS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:
Dr. Gülayşe İnce Dunn, Faculty Member in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics
The areas where bioscience can be applied are expanding every day. We can observe this particularly in how basic medicine is gradually shifting towards the field of molecular biology. New methods in diagnosis and the treatment of disease are now developed on the basis of the discoveries of molecular biologists. We can learn how human cells function down to the slightest detail thanks to molecular biology research. Together with my research group at Koç University, I study the effects of molecular and genetic foundations on the development of the neural system in infants and developmental anomalies such as mental retardation and learning disorders. Graduates from this department can have successful careers in academic institutions, industry, the pharmaceutical industry, and the healthcare sector.
THE DEPARTMENT OF MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND GENETICS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:
Melis Çelik, 2018 Double Major Program Graduate from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics & Psychology
Koç University provides many opportunities to ensure that you discover yourself and make the right decision when choosing which field you want to study. Thanks to the Work-Study program, you have the opportunity to work in fully-equipped laboratories while you’re still an undergraduate student, have a strong student-professor relationship, and access interdisciplinary education and research opportunities. In addition, the Career Development Center helps you in shaping your career after the high quality education at Koç University which aims to train fully-equipped professionals compatible with international standards. Starting when I was a freshman, I took part in various studies in the Molecular Biotechnology and Biological Clock Laboratory in addition to the research I conduced as part of the Work-Study program. This experience gave me the opportunity to take part in other scientific research by applying basic molecular biology techniques. And thanks to Koç University’s distinctive double major program, I started to study in the Psychology Department as well. This provided me an interdisciplinary work discipline and I acquired different points of view. Opening its doors not only to scientific but also to social activities through various clubs and arts events, Koç University is undoubtedly the right address for you to discover yourself, develop in every sense, and actualize your dreams.
