Philosophy Department
Besides theoretical problems, philosophy is concerned with the concrete problems that we face in our everyday lives and investigates their conceptual foundations. This characteristic brings philosophy in constant contact with various disciplines such as law, public administration, as well as many branches of science and technology. The Philosophy Department conducts philosophical research on three axes: On fundamental areas of theoretical philosophy, practical philosophy, and interdisciplinary studies. The strength of the department is that it offers a high-quality education, providing students with a wide perspective in theoretical philosophy, ethics, social and political philosophy, history of philosophy, and feminist philosophy. Department graduates have very strong analytical and critical thinking skills in addition to a comprehensive knowledge of the history of philosophy. Moreover, they do not only become more knowledgeable, they acquire the ability to reflect on and question their own lives, and gain the skill of giving reasons for their actions. THE PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:
İdil Barlas,
2016 Graduate from the Department of Philosophy
Philosophy is a department that helps us break down our prejudices and analyze phenomena from a broader perspective. One of the best features of our department is that it is not crowded. This means we have the possibility to be in communication with the faculty members and can consult them to get their advice about how we should proceed with our education or what we should do after graduation. And the fact that students can take courses from different departments makes Koç University very special. Coming from a department such as Philosophy, which is closely related to different disciplines, we start our lives one step ahead. A student can do a double major or minor with any department, and bring philosophy with another discipline to map out a specific route for his or her future. The exchange programs provide us with the opportunity to gain new experiences in this regard.
