THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:
Prof. Dr. Zeynep Cemalcılar, Faculty Member of the Psychology Department
Psychology was one of the first departments in Koç University. Since 1993, we have continued to learn, discuss and research together with our students, and our excitement grows with each passing year. Today, psychological science produces useful information in every field. Therefore, we conduct interdisciplinary studies in our department in various fields ranging from medicine to engineering, from sociology to media. Additionally, we cooperate with facilitators from many areas outside the University. Our department is very dynamic and productive not only for our students, but also for students from different departments thanks to the double major and minor programs. Additionally, we recently started a certificate program in User Experience Research in collaboration with the Media and Visual Arts Department.
THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:
Parla Buyruk, 2016 Double Major Program Graduate from the Department of Psychology & Media and Visual Arts
I chose Koç University because of its world-renowned academic staff, its philosophy of education, and the opportunities it provides to its students. I completed the Brain and Cognitive Sciences Certificate Program in order to develop a multi-directional perspective. With the minor program, I also studied Media and Visual Arts. I gained scientific research experience from three different laboratories. In 2014, I visited California University in San Diego on an OIP Global Exchange Scholarship. I had the opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty members. I always felt that my efforts were appreciated, and this gave me self-confidence. In addition, I worked in various positions on campus, from mentoring to lecturing assistant, and I took an active role in the Psychology Club. I also served as the Vice President in charge of Foreign Affairs in the Working Group of Turkish Psychology Students. I represented Turkey for the European Federation of Psychology Students’ Associations. Through all this, I created a wide social network. Looking back, I see that I made the right decision and made the most of the opportunities offered to me.
