Sociology Department
The Sociology Department aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to analyze social processes from a critical perspective and to find solutions to social problems. In addition, the department aims to provide a solid background in sociology’s main concepts, theoretical frameworks, and research methods. This education is supported by courses designed according to the expertise of the faculty members on topics such as globalization, population dynamics, political economy of information and communication, family sociology, sociology of education, race/ethnicity, urban problems, social exclusion, sociology of development, political sociology, and migration studies. Students in the Sociology Department receive a full-fledged education and continue their graduate studies in Turkey or abroad or start working. Our graduates go on to work in market research and development companies, consultancy firms, the advertising and human resources sectors, media industry or they serve as researchers in national or international non-governmental organizations..
THE SOCIOLOGY DEPARTMENT FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:
Assoc. Prof. Dikmen Bezmez, Faculty Member of the Sociology Department
My fields of expertise are urban sociology and disability studies. Currently, I am working on a project investigating how disability is tackled in physical therapy and rehabilitation, and how disabled individuals perceive such physical therapy and rehabilitation processes. More specifically, I study the relations between patients and hospital attendants, how the concept of “walking” is designed in rehabilitation, rehabilitation technologies, and disability representations on healthcare shows on TV which I’m studying with Dr. Ergin Bulut from the Department of Media and Visual Arts.

Seçil Kınay, 2004 Graduate from the Department of Sociology
I manage the educational, cultural and health projects of the Vehbi Koç Foundation which seeks to develop the “best examples” of sustainable and reproducible models to support the rapid development of society and benefit Turkey. My education at Koç University was a positive experience which got me to this point and helped me discover myself. I benefited a lot from the interdisciplinary approaches in sociology, which is a science that aims to understand individuals and societies. Our academic staff cooperates with various fields and industries and this increases the quality of education and gives you the chance to see the diverse fields you can work in after graduation. The student clubs at Koç University compliment the education as well. My roles in the foundation of and activities in the Arts Club when I was a student were important experiences that prepared me for life.
