WHAT CAN I DO AFTER I GRADUATE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS?
Department of Physics
The primary topics the Department of Physics researches in the field of theoretical physics include basic quantum physics and gravitation, mathematical physics, quantum optics, statistical mechanics, condensed matter physics, and calculated electro-magnetics. Koç University’s advanced research laboratory is equipped with modern devices and conducts experimental research such as the development of new solid-state lasers, micro and nano photonics and their applications in optical communication, and in biology and polymer science. Top level advanced computer systems are used for both experimental and theoretical research. All students increase their knowledge and skills by doing research under the supervision of a faculty member during their senior year research projects. With its minor program, it gives students the opportunity to build interest in other fields as well. Further, its gives department graduates the opportunity to continue their education in the Graduate Degree Programs of Koç University in the departments of Physics, Materials Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Genetics, or Optoelectronics and Photonic Engineering. Students who seek to begin an academic career are easily accepted into the PhD programs of the world’s best universities.
THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ACADEMIC:
Associate Professor Dr. Kaan Güven, Faculty Member in the Department of Physics
The driving force behind science is curiosity. Curiosity is a strong instinct when we’re young, but it needs certain conditions to flourish as we grow up. Koç University offers an environment of academic freedom so that students can take courses according to their sense of curiosity, have unlimited access to many international databases, and receive support using advanced research laboratories and technological devices. It’s like a playground with the best equipment and conditions for those who wish to discover the unknowns of the universe and humanity. Koç University’s Department of Physics is a team that enjoys wondering about things and arousing the curiosity of faculty members and students together. It’s our daily job to seek answers to the questions “How?” and “Why?” by looking at the nature of the phenomena of this universe from the nano to the astronomic scale. We are very excited that the answers to these questions will one day contribute to our store of knowledge and the technology we use. We look forward to you joining us on this eternal journey since we believe our students will continue from where we leave off in the future.
THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:
Cem Güney Torun, 2018 Double Major Program Graduate from the Department of Physics and Mathematics
The Department of Physics offers a universally accepted high quality curriculum to the students of Koç University. It equips us with knowledge of all the branches of physics giving us the opportunity to experience everything we need for our career planning. In addition to the high-quality education, what differentiates Koç University is the flexibility it offers with its double major and minor programs. I studied Mathematics in the double major program, and I learned about the different areas I’m interested in. Another important opportunity Koç University offers is the Work-Study Program, which allowed me to conduct various studies in the Laser Research Laboratory for three years. I experienced the scientific research that is the core of science. It was a really special experience to contribute to such studies so early.
