THE DEPARTMENT OF MEDIA AND VISUAL ARTS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A GRADUATE:
Melik Kuru,
2015 Graduate from the Department of Media and Visual Arts and Minor in Sociology Program
In 2011, I was trying to choose the best university for myself. I had a high exam score and love of cinema in my heart, so I chose Koç University in no time flat. For me, what distinguished Koç University’s Department of Media and Visual Arts from other undergraduate programs offering a film education was its student-focused academic structure and curriculum concentrating on many visual arts disciplines. On the one hand, I acquired a quality foundation through practical and theoretical movie courses over my four years of education, and on the other hand, I took advantage of the rich academic environment to learn about photography, design, visual communication, media and other visual disciplines. I also got to see how many of my friends who were indecisive about which field they wanted to develop expertise in were able to discover skills they hadn’t realized they’d had before, thanks to the multi-option academic program offered by the Department of Media and Visual Arts.
Currently, I live in New York and study at Columbia University, in the Directing and Scriptwriting graduate program. Thanks to my job, I tell stories and produce movies together with people of different social backgrounds from around the world. I improved my intellectual, practical and social skills thanks to Koç University, and I continue to make films – where team work is essential – at one of the most respected academic institutions in the world. I keep in contact with my friends whom I met at Koç University and whose work I admire, in addition to the professors I worked with. Looking back two years after my graduation, I better understand what the Department of Media and Visual Arts means for me: It’s a home where not only students of this department but also students from all other departments inspire one another in creativity, work together, and produce under the guidance of academics who love teaching and who continue their interactions with their students after graduation.
